Failure to Convert Projects to New Format
Summary
Starting with version 2023.1.0, the new data architecture is introduced in Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS. As a result, projects created in earlier versions must be converted before they can be opened in version 2023.1.0 or newer.
The existing projects can be converted using one of the following methods:
Automatic conversion when opening an older project.
Batch conversion using the Projects & Storage settings.
Batch conversion using REGISTER 360 Converter, a standalone, unlicensed tool.
Workaround
Initial Checks
In case the conversion process fails for any reason, the following troubleshooting tips will be useful:
Back up projects before converting them.
Ensure you have sufficient hard disk space.
To successfully convert a project, make sure you have around three times the size of the project folder available in free disk space. A more precise estimate is three times the total size of all HPC files within the project folder, but using the full folder size as a reference provides a safe buffer. Here's how the required space is distributed:
Two-thirds of the space should be available on the temporary drive.
One-third should be available on the drive where the project folder is located.
Conversion Logic
Conversion is an "all-or-nothing " process in which the point cloud data is converted to a new format.
This means if any Setup point cloud or deliverable point cloud fails to convert, the entire process is aborted.
However, the conversion has been made very robust, and it has been ensured that aborting or even crashing at any point during conversion should leave the project in a safe state. This means users should always be able to open any failed conversions in a previous version of Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS. Thus, it’s necessary to repair the database in an older version before converting it.
If the Setup point cloud conversion fails:
Back up the project.
Install an older version of Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS (for example, 2023.0.3).
Open the project and take note of the active version. The following steps need to be done for ALL versions.
Run the project repair tool (it works on the active version only).
If errors are reported, resolve them or delete the reported Setups.
Once all reported errors are resolved and the repair tool runs successfully, move to the next step.
Make the next version active and redo the steps above.
Continue to do this for all versions.
Once all versions have been repaired successfully, install the latest version of Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS.
Repair the project.
Convert the project.
If the point cloud is not visible, repair it again.
Note: If the older versions are no longer needed, consider deleting them.
If the deliverable point cloud conversion fails:
Back up the project.
Install an older version of Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS (for example, 2023.0.3).
Reopen the project and delete all final registrations.
Install the latest version of Cyclone REGISTER 360 PLUS.
Repair the project.
Convert the project.
If the point cloud is not visible, repair it again.
Note: It will save time converting if unnecessary final registrations are deleted beforehand.
